Panama City Beach (June 2003)

Here are some pictures, hot off the press. On mouse-over, you'll see a short description of each image. Click on the picture of your choice to see an enlarged version of it.

Shortly before we headed off to the beach, the Danny Penning family stopped for an all-too-short visit to Athens. It was really fun to have them with us, if only for a brief period. They were on their way to the beach as well, but a week before we went.

Jenni, Geralyn, Danny, Adam. Sorry the picture is so poor. Didn't think we needed the flash. Wrong, again. This is a man who really needs a vacation. It was raining the day before we took off for Panama City and I had to cut the grass. How many times do you see someone cutting grass with an umbrella in hand? Julia and Biz were obviously happy to be at the beach. Our house had a very nice deck and as you can tell, a wide view of the beach. The house is aptly nicknamed the Panorama.
Even though we had rain almost every day, there were really nice periods that allowed us to get some spectacular sunset shots, which you will see scattered throughout this page.

As soon as the rain let up, the kids made it to the sand and went about the business of building.

Julia, Aaron and Biz Sandcastle1 I never wanted to be buried in the sand, but we obviously had four boys who thought it would be great fun. The adults should have taken advantage of the situation, but alas we exercised restraint. Now we have them where we want them.

It was great having the John Penning family with us for the week (Johnny, Lesley, Johnathon, Thomas, Aaron and Samuel.) They occupied the lower level of the Panorama. Once we got back and developed our pictures, we were astonished to realize that we had not a one featuring Thomas. Our apologies.

Got a fair amount of Frisbie tossing in this particular day. Perhaps Greg's best sport is Ultimate Frisbie and it showed, as he was able to do a lot of fancy catches and throws for all to see.

Our house is the one in the middle. The house at left is owned by a family that won a lottery somewhere up north and made this their permanent home. They have a sign on the back of the house which states that dreams can really come true. Frisbie tossing et al. Doug, Johnathon and Aaron Greg was in the midst of a flip in which he picked up the Frisbie and fired it off while in spinning motion. It was quite impressive.

Shortly after we arrived, the Army Corps of Engineers began a beach reclamation process, the end result being beautifully clear water turning a murky brown or black. As you can imagine, this wasn't met with a great deal of enthusiasm by those vacationing there. Many people at local hotels checked out as a result. The negative feedback that was received forced them to stop after about three days of dredging. The next morning, the water was back to normal and people were back playing in it again.

Doug and Johnathon Aaron The dredging churned up anything that was in its path. Many would hang around the spew to look for sea shells, shark teeth, pirate treasure, etc. Sunset3
